Materials Needed
- Free ordinal number puzzles pdf
- Printer and paper
- Scissors
- Glue
- Laminating machine and sheets (optional)
How to Make the Ordinal Number Puzzles
If you want to make this activity more sturdy, then I recommend laminating each of the pages.
1. Download and print the digital download – you can find the link to the free printable at the bottom of the post. Just click the large blue button to get your copy.

2. Cut out the animal cards – use a pair of scissors to separate the ten animal cards into their individual strips.

3. Turn the strips into prisms – Fold each strip along the different lines, then glue the two edges with the words “glue here” together.
If you are making this activity to use year after year, then you can use velcro dots instead of glue to stick the two edges together. That way you can undo each animal card and lay it flat for storage.

4. Prepare the position strip page – do this by first cutting along the dotted line. Then line up each of the sides so that all of the circles are aligned.

5. Cut out each puzzle page – there are two puzzles for each page. There are also two versions of the puzzles.
Version A has the numeral for each ordinal number. (10 different puzzles)
Version B has the word for each ordinal number. (10 different puzzles)

How to Play
Set up your maths center – arrange the position strip, animal cards and puzzle pages so that all of the pieces are easy to see and reach.

1. Look at the ordinal number assigned to each animal.

2. Find the corresponding animal card.

3. Place the animal card in the correct position on the position strip.

4. Repeat until all of the animals are placed along the position strip.
