  1. Paper plate
  2. Scissors
  3. Pencil
  4. Yellow, blue and white paint
  5. Blue or black paper
  6. Glue
  7. Small piece of cardboard

1. Draw a crescent moon and clouds on the paper plate.

While I chose to make a crescent moon shape, you don’t have to. You can make your fun moon craft by leaving the whole plate intact and making a full moon instead.

2. Cut the pieces out.

Use a pair of scissors to cut out the pieces. Using scissors is a great way for kids of all ages to practice their fine motor skills. However younger children may need an adult to help them.

3. Paint the moon yellow.

If you want to make your moon paper plate craft more realistic, then you can use grey paint instead of yellow paint. I simply chose yellow because I wanted this craft to be bright and colorful.

4. Place dots of blue paint over the background.

I wanted to make the background an interesting pattern, so I decided to do some scrape painting.

To start, I placed a series of white and blue dots of paint over one side of the page. As well as a few random dots spread throughout the middle of the page.

5. Scrape the paint across.

Use a piece of cardboard or an old credit card to scrape the paint from one side of the page to the other.

Don’t worry if it doesn’t cover the page perfectly the first time. You can use the paint that is gathered on the piece of cardboard to go over the whole page as many times as you like.

6. Let it dry.

If you don’t want to create a background this way. You can always just leave the paper blank, or use white paint and a cotton bud to make a whole lot of stars all over the background.

7. Glue on the moon.

Place some glue or double sided adhesive tape to the back side of the moon, then place it in the middle of your page.

8. Glue on the clouds.

Since the plate is slightly domed, it was easy to slide one of the clouds in behind the back of the paper plate.

I then placed another cloud over the top of the moon.

Where you place the clouds is optional. Let your little astronaut glue everything down however they like.
