  1. An empty cardboard box
  2. White paper
  3. Q-tips
  4. Paint
  5. Scissors
  6. Sharpie

1. Cover the cardboard box in white paper.

You can just paint the box with white paint. But I find this a messy and unnecessary step. Instead, just glue some printer paper down using mod podge.

2. Draw a rainbow fish onto the paper using a sharpie.

If it’s easier for you, swap step 1 and step 2 around. If you’re not comfortable drawing, you can always trace or print a picture of the rainbow fish onto your paper first, and then glue it down.

3. Make a small hole in each fish scale using scissors.

I prefer using a small screwdriver to make these holes because I love how they come out perfectly round. But of course, you can use whatever tools you have on hand or are comfortable using.

4. Paint your fish and q-tips.

Make sure that the number of colored q-tips match the number of colored scales. For example, if you paint 4 scales red, make sure that you have 4 red q-tips to match them. That way this activity can be used as a color matching activity as well as a fine motor one.

5. Once the q-tip are dried, cut them in half.

I cut my q-tips in half after they are dry, because it is easier to balance them on my drying rack when they are whole.

6. Match the colors
