How to make your own Summer Lacing Cards

1. Download and print the pdf

There are 10 different themed lacing cards for you to use. Just head to the bottom of the page and click the large blue button to get your copy of this free resource.

2. Laminate each of the pages

Run your set of printable lacing cards through a laminator. This will help to make the cards more stable (so you can use them year after year), as well as wipe-able (to help keep them clean).

You can also just print the lacing cards onto some thick card stock instead, if you prefer to make them recyclable.

3. Cut out the cute designs

Use a pair of scissors to cut out each of the colorful shapes.

4. Make the holes

You’ll find that each card’s design is surrounded by a series of small grey circles.

Use a hole punch (I find using a single hole punch the easiest) to make a hole through each of the grey dots.

5. Grab your yarn and enjoy playing

Now all you need to do is use a piece of yarn or a shoelace to thread one end through each of the holes.

What You’re Learning

Fine motor skills refer to the small muscles in the hand and fingers. Developing these skills is important for being able to write when kids go to school, as well as being able to complete tasks independently. (For example, dressing and feeding themselves).

Picking up the end of a string and threading them through small holes in these summer sewing cards is all going to help little ones develop:

  • Pincer grip,
  • Hand-eye coordination,
  • Hand strength
