Materials Needed

  1. 4 Brown pipe cleaners
  2. Green and pink pony beads
  3. Flower buttons (optional)

How to Make a Spring Tree Threading Activity

1. Group the 4 pipe cleaners and bend them in half.

Make sure to leave your finger in the middle of the bend, because you want the curve to be large. This is important for step 3.

2. Wrap the middle of the pipe cleaners around your finger, and twist them together.

This will be your tree trunk, so you only need to twist the pipe cleaners about 1/2 to 1/3 of the way up.

3. Spread out the roots.

Take your finger out of the loop, and spread the four circles out. These will give your tree some support so that it can stand on its own.

4. Bend and twist the loose ends of the pipe cleaners, to make the top of the tree.

These will be the branches of your tree, and you can make them whatever shape you like. Older children will most likely have so much fun doing this step themselves, but younger toddlers may need the help of an adult.

5. Thread some green and pink beads onto the branches.

I chose green and pink because I just love cherry blossom crafts and wanted my own version in a fine motor activity.

However, you can choose different colors or small items. For example, these button flowers would make your tree look beautiful and are a good way to teach toddlers color recognition.

Or red, orange and yellow beads would work beautifully for a Fall themed threading activity.

6. Keep threading until the tree is full.

Toddlers and preschoolers will keep going until their hand muscles get tired. So don’t be disappointed if they don’t finish their entire tree. Either way, this great activity is a fun way to play this Spring time.
