Materials Needed

How to make Taste Safe Mud

Step 1: In a large bowl add 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder for each cup of flour that you use. Mix until combined.

I used roughly 8 cups of flour for this bin. However you can use more or less, depending on what works best for you.

If you don’t have any cocoa powder on hand, don’t worry, you can use food coloring or chocolate pudding mix instead. All of them will work in an edible mud recipe.

2. Add in some water and mix.

Do this step slowly, only adding a bit of water at a time. Keep adding a small amount of water until the mixture has reached the consistency that you would like.

I found that I used roughly 1 cup of water for each cup of flour to get the consistency that I wanted. If you want your mud to be more watery, then just add more water to your play mud until you are happy.

3. Pour the mud into a container and add some sensory bin accessories.

I used the toy pots and pans from our kitchen set but you can use real ones from the kitchen. I’ve been drooling over this Melissa and Doug Pots and Pans Set because they look like real pots and pans, which means my kitchen cupboards would be left alone. I let my kids play with real pots and pans in our 5 Minute DIY Mud Kitchen, and I discovered that the kids really preferred playing with the real ones compared to their plastic toy ones.

More ways to use your DIY Mud Recipe

Add a variety of different toys to your taste safe fake mud to create a variety of different activity ideas. For example:

  • Add in farm animals and make a farmyard sensory idea.
  • Add in monster trucks, toy cars or dump trucks, which then need to go through a car wash.
  • Use corn starch instead of flour to turn this into a non-newtonian fluid.

What will you add to your pretend mud to make it amazing?
