Valentine’s Playdough Invitation to Play
Use your imagination and make a variety of different activities with this Valentine’s Playdough Invitation to Play. How many things can you come up with using just a few simple supplies?
This easy activity is a fantastic way to help young children develop fine motor skills. By strengthening the small muscles in the hands and fingers, it will help them get ready for learning to write at school. Developing fine motor skills will also help to increase their independence, by making your kids more capable of feeding and dressing themselves.

Adult supervision is required for all activities at all times. Some of the links provided in this blog are affiliate links. I will be paid a commission if you use this link to make a purchase.
There’s no better way to show kids that you love them than by spending quality time together. Some Valentine’s day themed activities are perfect for finding ways to spend with your little ones. Or you can invest in the Valentine’s Day Activity Pack, which is filled with educational printables for you kids.

How to Set Up a Valentine’s Playdough Invitation to Play

I made the pink playdough myself using this Homemade Playdough Recipe. It’s taste-safe, really easy to make and stays softer for longer than store bought playdough does.
I used the Valentine’s themed materials that I already had on hand, but of course you can use whatever you like. You may also want to include:
- Paper straws
- Pipe cleaners
- Pom Poms
- Feathers
- Buttons
Different Ways to Play
Making Shapes

Roll the playdough into snakes or balls and use them to make shapes. Here we made a heart shape since this activity was for valentine’s day. But you can make a whole collection of squares, circles and triangles too.
Valentine’s Cupcakes

Roll the playdough into balls and place them into the cupcake liners. This is a fun way to engage in imaginative play using playdough.

My little girl also had fun decorating her cupcakes with the heart shaped cake toppers. Pushing the hearts into the playdough is very similar to the Posting Hearts Activity, which is fantastic for helping babies and toddlers develop fine motor skills.
Love Bugs

Use googly eyes to turn your playdough into cute, imaginative love bug creations. This little valentine’s caterpillar looks like it’s ready to crawl away and look for food.

However, this Valentine’s monster was armed with heart spikes to protect itself, a bit like a rolled up hedgehog.
Making love bugs was definitely the best part of this activity. Both my kids had so much fun coming up with their own creations.
