How to Set Up a Valentine’s Playdough Invitation to Play

1. Collect your materials.

I made the pink playdough myself using this Homemade Playdough Recipe. It’s taste-safe, really easy to make and stays softer for longer than store bought playdough does.

I used the Valentine’s themed materials that I already had on hand, but of course you can use whatever you like. You may also want to include:

  1. Paper straws
  2. Pipe cleaners
  3. Pom Poms
  4. Feathers
  5. Buttons

Making Shapes

Roll the playdough into snakes or balls and use them to make shapes. Here we made a heart shape since this activity was for valentine’s day. But you can make a whole collection of squares, circles and triangles too.

Valentine’s Cupcakes

Roll the playdough into balls and place them into the cupcake liners. This is a fun way to engage in imaginative play using playdough.

My little girl also had fun decorating her cupcakes with the heart shaped cake toppers. Pushing the hearts into the playdough is very similar to the Posting Hearts Activity, which is fantastic for helping babies and toddlers develop fine motor skills.

Love Bugs

Use googly eyes to turn your playdough into cute, imaginative love bug creations. This little valentine’s caterpillar looks like it’s ready to crawl away and look for food.

However, this Valentine’s monster was armed with heart spikes to protect itself, a bit like a rolled up hedgehog.

Making love bugs was definitely the best part of this activity. Both my kids had so much fun coming up with their own creations.
