Valentines Sensory Activities

There are so many sensory play ideas to try this Valentines Day, but my favorite so far is this Rainbow Rice Valentines Sensory Bin. (Since I used my rainbow rice recipe this sensory bin is 100% taste safe. Making it suitable for babies as well as toddlers and preschoolers.) My kids just loved filling up their Valentine’s bucket and decorating them with some flowers to give as “gifts”.

Materials Needed

  1. Red yarn
  2. Pink, purple and white pom poms
  3. Heart shaped boxes (optional)
  4. Bubble Tongs and other fine motor tools
  5. A large container to hold it all.

How to set up your Valentines Pom Pom Sensory Bin

Step 1: Cut the yarn into pieces and spread it around the bottom of the large container.

I usually take the entire ball of yarn and cut it down the middle. It takes less than a minute and then you don’t have to unravel the whole ball.

2. Place the heart boxes in the container.

I made these heart boxes out of construction card. They’re very easy to make but not as strong as store bought ones. If you are doing this activity with a class, then I recommend investing in something more sturdy. Like these heart shaped wooden boxes

3. Sprinkle the pom pom over the yarn.

4. Enjoy learning.

Learning Through Play

Although this sensory bin is simple, it contains a lot of hidden learning opportunities. Together we sorted the pom pom by color and by size. Exploring the size concepts of small, medium and large.

Although I didn’t do it this time (because my preschooler wasn’t interested), you can also use the pom poms to practice pattern recognition. Just line up different color/sized pom poms in an ABAB line and ask your preschooler to complete the pattern.

My little girl used the heart shaped boxes to make a birthday “spaghetti cake” for me. Complete with pom pom candles and about 20 renditions of the happy birthday song.

Finally, we practiced some fine motor skills with the ball tongs. The kids enjoyed seeing how many pom poms could fit inside the tongs, (another great opportunity to practice counting).

As you can see, this simple sensory activity has a lot of math and fine motor practice involved too.
