How to Make a Volcano Sensory Bin

1. Pour the chickpeas into a large container

I used the dried chickpeas from my hot chocolate sensory bin for this activity, but you can use whichever sensory materials you like. If you don’t want to use chickpeas, you can also try sensory sand (like moon sand or kinetic sand) or even just regular dirt from the garden.

2. Place the cup in the middle

I painted a regular paper cup with red paint, however you can also buy one that’s already red. A paper cup works well because it’s already a cone shape, but of course you can use whatever you already have on hand. There’s really no rules when it comes to making the ultimate sensory experience.

3. Add in some rainbow rice

I wanted this sensory bin idea to look like an erupting volcano. So I poured the red rice around the top of the volcano with little bits flowing outwards.

You can use this taste-safe rainbow rice recipe to make only red rice. It uses food coloring to change the color of the rice and is suitable for babies and toddlers.

4. Place the small toys

Now you can add in your favorite dinosaurs and any other materials you want, like faux plants or trees.

This helps to turn your sensory bin into a dinosaur world for small world play.

5. Enjoy playing

Use your wooden scoops, cups and bowls to explore the different fillers with some hands-on play. This is a great way to help young children develop fine motor skills (the muscles in their hands and fingers) and become more independent.

Making a themed sensory bin that doubles as a small world is great if you want hours of imaginative play. Kids will have so much fun telling stories and going on a dinosaur adventure.
