Materials Needed
- Watercolor paints
- Watercolor paper
- Paint brushes
- Clear glue or white wax crayons
How to Make Watercolor Resist Spider Web Art
1. Draw a spiderweb.
There are several ways to do watercolor resist art projects. For this kids art idea, I tried using clear glue because I wanted to see what it would be like.
However, you can also draw the spider web with:
- Wax crayons.
- Oil pastels.
- Tape.
- Rubbing alcohol.
- Masking fluid.
2. Let it dry.
If you have used glue, then let it dry completely before moving onto the next step. If you have used a different method, like the ones mentioned above, you can move ahead whenever you’re ready.
3. Paint the background.
Use your water color paints and a paintbrush to decorate your background however you like. I had fun with blue, purple and pink paint. But I like the idea of using darker colors because I think that it would make it look like the spider web is shining in a dark night time sky.
4. Let it dry.
I found that the watercolor paint dried on top of the glue, making the color sit on top a little bit and obscuring the spider web pattern. I cleaned this color off with a wet wipe, which was easy enough to remove, but took a long time going over each line.
If you are doing this activity with older kids, then encourage them to paint in between the spaces, so that they don’t get this same problem with the paint sitting on top of the glue.
If you are doing this activity with younger kids, who are less likely to stick between the lines. Then I recommend using an oil pastel method instead of glue. That way you can still have fun, without needing to clean the color from the spider web afterwards.
