Materials Needed
- Winter lacing cards digital download
- Printer and paper
- Laminating machine and sheets
- Scissors
- Shoelaces or string
- Hole punch
How to Make the Winter Lacing Cards
1. Download and print the Winter lacing cards digital file.
There are 10 different cards to use, each of which depicts a classic icon of Winter. nJust head to the bottom of the post and click the large blue button to get your copy.
2. Use a pair of scissors to cut out each of the individual cards.
Make sure that you leave the small circles surrounding each picture around the card. These will be needed in step 5.
3. Laminate the cards.
You can also swap steps 2 and 3 around. Laminate the entire page first before cutting out the cards. The plus side of doing it this way is that you only have to cut out each picture once. The downside is that your card is more likely to come apart while it’s being played with, because it no longer has the plastic-on-plastic edge, which is strongest.
4. Cut out the cards again.
Ensure that you leave 1/4 – 1/2 inch (0.5 – 1 cm) of plastic-on-plastic edging around the card. This will make the lacing cards more sturdy and more likely to last year after year if you’re working in a classroom environment.
5. Use a hole punch to make the little holes around the card.
Use the small grey circles surrounding the cards as a guide to punch holes. You can use either a double or a single hole punch for this part of the project.
If you want to get your kids involved, they can also do this step for you. Using a paper punch is a great way for younger children to strengthen the small muscles in their hand and fingers
How to Play
Once you’ve made your own lacing cards, they’re incredibly simple to play with. Just thread a shoelace or string through the holes, like you thread when sewing.
If you are doing this activity in a classroom, then I recommend tying the end of one shoelace to each card. That way the shoelaces won’t get lost easily.
As your young kids thread the string through the sewing cards, their little hands will be practicing a variety of fine motor skills, such as:
- Pincer grip
- Hand-eye coordination
- Dexterity
- Developing strength
