  1. A small colander
  2. Heart shaped cake toppers

1. Collect your supplies.

If you can’t find any heart shaped cake toppers don’t worry. You can always stick some heart stickers to the end of a toothpick instead.

2. Turn the colander over, and place a heart through one of the holes.

3. Repeat step 2 until you’ve used all of the hearts.

Since this is a very simple activity, it’s best for older babies and toddlers. Preschoolers will most likely find it too easy and won’t be engaged for more than 5 minutes.

However, if you want to make it more challenging, then you can turn it into a math activity. Simply write the numbers 1 – 20 on each of the hearts and encourage your kids to post the hearts in number order.

This activity is a fantastic way to help toddlers and preschoolers develop fine motor skills. Even older babies will be able to give it a try. Picking up and posting the hearts will require young children to develop:

  1. Pincer grip
  2. Hand-eye coordination
  3. Precision
  4. Hand strength
