Pasta Threading (Fine Motor Activity for Kids)
Use playdough, beads and a piece of pasta to make this simple fine motor activity. Pasta threading is a great way to help kids have fun and strengthen their little hands through play.
This easy activity is perfect for toddlers and preschoolers. I first tried it when my kids were 2 and 4, and they had so much fun. You can also use it to teach young children a variety of fine motor skills like pincer grip, hand-eye coordination and more.

Adult supervision is required for all activities at all times. Some of the links provided in this blog are affiliate links. I will be paid a commission if you use this link to make a purchase.
Materials Needed
- Play dough
- Uncooked spaghetti
- Beads
If you also want to make your own playdough then check out this homemade playdough recipe. I prefer making my own because we use it a lot and it stays softer for longer than the store bought play doh.

How to Make a Pasta Threading Activity
1. Roll the playdough into a ball

You’ll need enough playdough to make a sturdy base for this activity. I find that a lump, about the size of your fist, is perfect.
Roll your playdough into a ball and squish it down onto the table, just enough so that the bottom is firmly stuck to the table, but not enough that it’s now completely flat.
2. Post your spaghetti strands into the playdough

I used uncooked spaghetti to make this activity. However, you can use other items, such as pipe cleaners or even pencils.
As long as the item you use it thin enough to be threaded through your beads, you’ll be able to play.
3. Gather your beads

I’ve tried this activity a couple of different times. Once again, you can use a few different items instead of beads.
You can cut straws cut into pieces, use cheerios or hollow pasta pieces (like penne).
4. Enjoy Playing

Now all you need to do is show your 2 year olds how to thread the beads over the pasta. Then let them explore and play however they want.
Try it the other way round

My son liked to place the straws into the playdough first, and then post the spaghetti inside the straws. This is a small change that is still great for fine motor development.
