How to Make an Egg Carton Color Sort Activity

1. Cut the straws into 1 inch lengths

I used colorful straws for this activity because I already had them in my craft supplies. However, I think that a huge collection of colourful pom poms would be amazing for this activity.

2. Color in the egg carton trays

Turn your egg carton upside down and color in each of the cups a different color. Make sure you choose colors that match the color of straws you have.

3. Poke a hole in each tray

I used a pair of scissors to make a hole in the middle of each of the coloured egg cartons. But of course, use what you have for this little project. A stanley knife or screwdriver will work too.

4. Use a pencil or screwdriver to make the hole bigger

To make the hole larger and more round (this is optional, I just liked the way it looked when the holes were round), insert a pencil into each hole. Then wiggle it around until the hole in the cardboard egg cartons are as large as you want.

If you do decide to do this activity with pom poms, you’ll need larger holes for them to fit through when you’re color sorting.

5. Post the straws through the holes

When you’re ready to play, simple pick up a color straw and place it through a hole in the corresponding color on the bottom of each cup

6. Enjoy playing

This activity is perfect for older babies and toddlers because it helps to develop a variety of different fine motor skills as well as colour recognition.
