DIY Snowflake Lacing Cards (Winter Fine Motor Activity)
These DIY Snowflake Lacing Cards are a fantastic way to bring the outside in during winter time. This is a great way to help younger kids develop fine motor skills, and can easily be packed away with your other busy bag activities.

Materials Needed
- Paper plate
- Blue paint
- Paintbrushes
- String or white yarn
- Push Pins, scissors, or a hole punch
How to Make DIY Snowflake Lacing Cards
1. Paint the paper plate.
You can choose whichever color you want. I picked blue because it contrasted nicely with the white string I used for the lacing.
If you don’t have any paper plates on hand, you can always use regular card stock instead. (Empty cereal boxes are perfect for this.) Just cut the card into a circle before making your snowflake design.
2. Use black dots to mark where the holes will go.
Essentially you are going to mark dots along two, imaginary circles within the plate. One circle is going to be along the outer edge of the plate, and the other will be in the middle.
Start by placing a dot in the very center of the plate. (See the red dot in the photo above.)
Then place six dots on the outer edge of the plate.
Finally, place another six dots around the second circle of the plate. About ½ to ⅔ of the way from the center. These six dots need to be placed in the middle of the previous six dots, so that they look like triangles when you join them together.
3. Turn the dots into holes.
I like to use a push pin on a cork board to make the initial holes. Then I used the stick from a small paintbrush to make the holes larger.
I stopped when the holes were about half a centimeter wide. However, if you are doing this activity with younger children, then larger holes would be easier for their little hands to work with.
4. Draw lines between the holes to mark the outline of the snowflake.
This is optional, the lines act as a guide for the children to follow as they are doing this activity.
5. Cut a long piece of string, yarn or a shoelace to lace with. Then tie one end of the string to the edge of the plate.
If you are using string or yarn, consider connecting a piece of pipe cleaner to the other side. If you don’t already have childrens needles to use, then pipe cleaners make a wonderful substitute and make the lacing easier (and less frustrating) for young kids.
6. Enjoy learning.
