Winter Fine Motor Activities

Winter play ideas are essential, especially when you can’t spend the whole day playing outside. Here are some of my favorite winter fine motor activities for kids.

What’s In The Snow Discovery Tray – What kinds of animals live in the snow? Find out with this free printable discovery tray. The animals are hiding under the snow (regular salt) and the kids need to brush the snow away to find the animals. This activity is also great for science centers as the kids learn about the harsh polar climate and the amazing animals that can live there.

DIY Snowflake Lacing Cards – Turn a regular paper plate into a lacing card. Lace a shoelace or string through the holes and turn it into a beautiful snowflake. These will look beautiful hanging up in your preschool classroom this winter.

Playdough Snowman – Create a playdough snowman and practice developing fine motor skills. You can make a 3D or 2D snowman depending on if you’re working with toddlers and preschoolers. They’ll love this activity, especially if you don’t live anywhere near snow and they still want to make a snowman.

Materials Needed

  1. Blue and white pipe cleaners (2 per snowflake)
  2. Blue and white beads
  3. Scissors

How to set up a Threading Snowflakes Activity

Step 1: Cut the pipe cleaners in half

I cut the pipe cleaners in half so that they would be easier for the kids to hold.

2. Take 2 halves and cross them in an x shape.

Wind them around each other so they don’t come apart.

3. Repeat with another 2 halves of pipe cleaner. So that they make a snowflake with 8 sections.

Although I didn’t try this method, you could also try bunching all 4 pipe cleaners halves together and twisting them in the middle. Then spread out each of the 8 arms to make the snowflake. This method would most likely be faster and easier if you are preparing this activity for a whole class.

4. Grab some blue and white beads and thread them onto each of the snowflake sections.

If you are doing this activity with older children, who need an extra challenge, try getting them to arrange the beads in patterns. (white, blue, white, blue, etc.)
