Free Heart Lacing Cards – Valentines Fine Motor Activity

How do you feel about getting things for FREE? Love it? Of course you do, who doesn’t? These Heart Lacing Cards come as a free printable template that you can download and print at your leisure. Lacing cards are one of the easiest fine motor activities for kids you can find, because almost all the work is done for you.

Lacing cards are great for toddlers and preschoolers, because it helps them to practice pincer grip, hand eye coordination, strengths and more. Not only that, but as teachers with limited space, they are so easy to pack away for next year. Talk about a win-win play activity.

Adult supervision is required for all activities at all times. Some of the links provided in this blog are affiliate links. I will be paid a commission if you use this link to make a purchase.

1. Download and print the free heart lacing cards template.

2. Cut out each of the hearts and laminate them.

3. Cut out each of the hearts again. Then take a hole punch and create holes around the edge of each of the cards.

If you prefer, you can laminate the entire A4 sheet of paper first and then only cut out each heart once. I prefer to cut before laminating, because I like having the clear edge of the laminating sheet around the whole card. I find that the cards hold up a bit better once the kids start to play with them. When I don’t create this edge, then after a while the sheet separates and makes the hearts less sturdy.

4. Tie a shoelace, or a piece of yarn, to one end of each card.

I attached my yarn in two different ways. One way was through one of the holes and the outer edge of the card. The second way was between two holes that I had punched instead. In the grand scheme of things, this really doesn’t matter. But if you like to have the cards look more seamless when they are completed, then I would recommend the second approach.

I don’t know about you, but I love fine motor activities that have nothing to do with worksheets. I will always choose a play based learning approach when I am trying to teach my kids anything, and fine motor skills are no different. Here are some more easy ideas to try.
