Materials Needed

  1. Printable alphabet cards
  2. Cookie sheet
  3. Pink rainbow rice or pink salt
  4. A paintbrush

I used my taste-safe rainbow rice recipe to make pink rice. It’s incredibly easy to make and you can use it for so many different activities.

How to Make a Valentine’s Day Writing Tray

1. Download and print your alphabet cards.

These cards have both uppercase and lowercase versions of each letter. So you can practice letter formation for the entire alphabet while you play.

2. Pour some rainbow rice onto a cookie sheet.

I also placed a plain piece of white paper underneath the rainbow rice first. However, this is optional. I chose to do this because the cookie sheet I had was pink, so there was very little contrast between the pink rice and the pink cookie sheet.

If you have a cookie sheet in a different color, you may find it easier to leave the paper out of the activity.

3. Use a paint brush or finger to move the rice around.

You can encourage your young kids to make a letter in the rice. However, even just making pictures, shapes or playing without guidance is a fun way to develop fine motor skills. It all depends on how old your child is and how they want to explore.
