How to make Black Glue Sun Art

Step 1. Draw the sun

On a piece of watercolor paper, draw a circle in the middle of the page. This will be the face of your sun.

I traced around the edge of a paper cup, but you can use a bowl or just draw by hand if you prefer.

Draw lines, radiating outwards, from the edge of your circle, to the tip of your page. These will be your suns rays.

I made the spaces in between these rays different sizes. But you can make them the same size if you prefer.

2. Make your black glue

I’ve tried a couple of different ways to make black glue. I have previously tried adding black paint to the glue, but found that sometimes they just didn’t mix well.

However, I found that the best way to make black glue was to add a few drops of black food coloring to the bottle of glue and mix it together. It’s much easier and works perfectly every time.

Of course, the easiest way is to buy black glue. That way you know it’ll work and you don’t have to worry about making any extra mess.

3. Copy the lines with glue

Open the tip of your glue bottle a little bit, and follow your previously drawn lines with the glue.

The more open your bottle is, the thicker your lines of glue will be. Experiment and see what you prefer using for your art project.

Let the glue dry completely before moving onto the next step.

This step will be difficult for toddlers and preschoolers to do on their own. If you are doing this art project with young children I recommend doing this step yourself first.

However, older children will probably be able to do this step by themselves.

4. Paint the spaces inbetween

Once the glue has dried, use watercolor paints to fill in the sun’s face and rays.

I used yellow and orange for my picture, however your children can use whatever color they like.

What You’re Learning

Creativity

Use your imagination to create something fun and unique. You can change the color of the sun, or draw a different expression on the sun’s face.

Maybe you prefer having sun rays that zigzag instead of being straight.

Arts and crafts are a wonderful way for children to develop non-verbal communications skills. It helps them to express what is going on in their heads in alternative ways.

Sun Safety

This sun painting is a great way to teach your kids about sun safety. Talk to your children about sunscreen, hats and other ways to protect their skin from the harmful rays of the sun.

Planning and Organization

This art idea has several steps that need to be done in order for the picture to work. Collecting the materials you need and doing these steps, helps children to plan out more complex tasks and increases their organizational skills.
