How to Make a Butterfly Kite Craft

1. Download and print the butterfly template.

You’ll find a free copy of the butterfly kite template below. Just head to the bottom of the post and click the large blue button to get your copy.

2. Paint the kite

I used regular acrylic paint to decorate the kite and extra butterflies, but of course you can use whatever you like. Even crayons or pencils would make a beautiful kite.

Once the paint was dried I also went back over the original lines of the butterfly with painting markers. This is optional, but I loved how it made the colors pop.

3. Cut out the pieces

Use a pair of scissors to cut out the kite and the small butterflies. Using scissors is a great way to help young children develop fine motor skills, and get those little finger muscles strong for when they start school.

4. Glue a strip of crepe paper to the back of the kite

Place little dots of glue to the back of the bottom of the kite, then attach a strip of crepe paper. This will be the tail of your kite craft so you can make it as long as you like.

5. Glue the small butterflies to the tail

The final step is to glue the small butterflies to the crepe paper.

One idea that I love, but didn’t try this time, is to turn this into a name crafts idea. You’ll need to have a small butterfly for each letter of your child’s name, then they can write their name on the tail. For example, a child named Jane would need 4 small butterflies on her kite tail. One butterfly for each letter of her name.

If you are doing this craft with a class full of children, you can hang their creations up on the wall. These simple kites make great decorations and are sure to brighten up any room.
