Materials Needed
- Purple paper
- Orange paper
- Black paint
- Black paint pen
- Glue
- Scissors
I love these acrylic paint pens, and I prefer to use them for art projects instead of sharpies.
I find that drawing on dried paint with a regular black marker ruins the tip of the marker rather quickly. Whereas I’ve never had that same problem with paint pens, which I’m assuming is because they are paint based and not ink based.
How to make Haunted House Handprint Art
1. Paint your entire hand black.
If you don’t want to use black paint, you don’t have to. You can also trace around your hand on a sheet of black paper instead. Then cut out the black paper and use that for your haunted house picture instead.
2. Press the hand onto a sheet of paper.
Some very young kids, like toddlers and preschoolers, love to move their fingers from side to side when they do handprint art.
If this sounds like some of the kids in your class, just remind them, before you take the handprint, to keep their fingers as still as possible.
3. Let the paint dry.
4. Use a black paint pen to draw the roofs.
Each finger can represent a tower in your haunted house. I drew triangles on top of the fingers to be a roof for the towers, which I then colored in with my paint pen.
You can also use multiple fingers together for one triangle roof. This is a great opportunity to let your kids do what they like and come up with their own creative ideas.
5. Draw a door, windows and jack-o-lanterns onto a piece of orange paper.
Make sure that the size of the doors and windows you are drawing are the right size for your handprint. This is a great way to get kids to estimate measurements by comparing the doors they’ve drawn to the palms of their hand.
6. Cut out the orange paper and glue the pieces into place.
Once again, I drew the details on the door and windows using a black paint pen. I kept my details very simple, but if you’re feeling creative you can try anything you like.
7. Draw any additional details you like.
This can include ghosts, a moon or a spooky tree in the background. The different details that I added to my picture include:
- Bats flying around the sky.
- Jack-o-lanterns by the front door.
- A black cat in the bottom right hand corner.
