Valentines Fine Motor Activities

I don’t know about you, but I love fine motor activities that have nothing to do with worksheets. I will always choose a play based learning approach when I am trying to teach my kids anything, and fine motor skills are no different.

Learn how to make DIY Valentines Peg Board out of an old cereal cardboard box and some q-tips. This is actually such an easy activity to prepare and will really help your kids practice their pincer grip. Post the q-tips into the heart and decorate it anyway you want, maybe consider practicing some patterns with older kids, or just letting them do their own thing.

How to Make Heart Lacing Cards

Step 1: Download and print the free heart lacing cards template.

2. Cut out each of the hearts and laminate them.

3. Cut out each of the hearts again. Then take a hole punch and create holes around the edge of each of the cards.

If you prefer, you can laminate the entire A4 sheet of paper first and then only cut out each heart once. I prefer to cut before laminating, because I like having the clear edge of the laminating sheet around the whole card. I find that the cards hold up a bit better once the kids start to play with them. When I don’t create this edge, then after a while the sheet separates and makes the hearts less sturdy.

4. Tie a shoelace, or a piece of yarn, to one end of each card.

I attached my yarn in two different ways. One way was through one of the holes and the outer edge of the card. The second way was between two holes that I had punched instead. In the grand scheme of things, this really doesn’t matter. But if you like to have the cards look more seamless when they are completed, then I would recommend the second approach.
