How to Draw this Northern Lights Art for Kids

Draw the Lines

Step 1. Start this northern lights art project by drawing some squiggly lines across a piece of paper with a light blue pastel. You can make it as thick or as heavy as you like.

Step 2. Use the purple and green pastels to make an alternating dotted line underneath the blue squiggles.

Step 3. Using your finger, smudge the pastel lines upwards, making a slight curve as you go. If the colors aren’t as bright as you would like, add more color and do it again.

Make the Snowy Mountains

Step 4. The bottom part of this northern lights drawing are the snowy mountains. For the mountains, you’ll need to tear the second piece of black paper lengthways, make sure to make the edges jagged as this will become your snowy mountains.

Step 5. Use your mountains as a template, line them up along the bottom half of the page and trace along the edges with the purple pastel.

Step 6. Then smudge this line upwards so that it looks like a glowing horizon.

Step 7. To make your continue making your snowy mountains, crumple the paper into a ball.

Step 8. Unfold the ball and run over the creases with the side of the white pastel. You’ll find that the pastel highlights the creases in the paper.

Step 9. Glue your mountains to the bottom of the page.

Paint Some Stars

Step 10. Use a toothpick and some white paint so make stars in the night sky.

You could also use a toothbrush to make the stars like in this Toothbrush Painting post. It’s an excellent fine motor activity because it gives the fingers a real workout.

Total Time 15 minutes
Difficulty Easy

Materials

  • Chalk Pastels
  • 2 x A4 Black Paper
  • White Paint
  • Toothpicks
  • Glue

Instructions

  1. Using the chalk pastels, draw a wavy blue line across the top half of one of the black pages. I made the mistake of not taking my blue lines all the way to the edge of the pages. I think that it I had done that, then this picture would look even better.

  2. Underneath this blue line, alternate purple and green lines.

  3. Using your finger, brush the chalk upwards, smuding the colors together.

  4. Tear a piece of black paper, about 1/3 of the height, Making sure the make jagged edges (like mountain tops).

  5. Use this piece of paper as a template, and draw another purple line above it.

  6. Once again, smudge the purple line upwards.

  7. Take the piece of black paper that you just used as a mountain template and scrunch it up in your hand.

  8. Spread it out again, and then take some white chalk pastel and gently rub the side of the pastel over the paper. The white will cling to the folded parts of the paper.

  9. Glue the snowy Mountains to the bottom of the first page.

  10. Finally, dip a toothpick in some white paint and dot it all over the sky. I made one sections of sky more dense than the rest, but you can do what you feel like.

Notes
