Winter Arts and Crafts for Kids

I love a fun winter craft this time of the year, especially because we’re stuck inside more than usual. If you want to get creative with your kids this holiday season, check out some of these other easy crafts with a Winter theme.

Materials Needed

Light blue construction paper
Pencil
Cotton wool
Twigs or brown pipe cleaner
Orange felt (or paper) cut into a small triangle
Dried black beans
Glue stick

How to Make a Cotton Ball Snowman Craft

1. Draw the outline of your snowman onto the blue background.

I started with a small circle for the snowman’s head, and then drew two more, progressively larger, circles underneath it for the snowman’s body. I also drew the face and buttons as a guide for the kids to follow. However, this is optional. Your kids might like to do their own pictures without any prompts.

You may also prefer to use plain white paper for these adorable snowmen. I just chose blue because I wanted the white of the cotton balls to really stand out.

2. Make your arms.

If you have twigs ready to go, then you can skip this step. However, if you are using brown pipe cleaners, then you’ll need to assemble them before you make your picture.

Take 2 pieces of pipe cleaner, one long and one short. Bend the short one in half and wrap it around the end of the long pipe cleaner. Now it will look like you have an arm with three fingers on one end.

3. Unroll and tear your fluffy cotton balls into pieces.

This step is optional. You can always glue the cotton balls onto the snowman while they are intact. I just feel guilty doing this, because it seems like unnecessary waste.

As a bonus, unrolling the balls is a great way for little hands to strengthen their dexterity, so get your kids to help with this step.

4. Glue the cotton balls onto the snowman picture.

You can also glue smaller circles of cotton wool, glitter or snowflake stickers, to the sky around the snowman so that it looks like he’s standing in falling snow.

5. Glue the black beans onto the picture to make a smile, eyes, and buttons.

If you prefer, you can also use googly eyes or black pom poms for your snowman’s eyes, instead of black beans like I did.

6. Glue the orange triangles onto the snowman’s face to make a carrot nose.

7. Glue the twigs or pipe cleaners onto the side of the snowman to make arms.

If you have them in your craft supplies, you can also make a scarf for the snowman out of ribbon or maybe a top hat out of some black paper. In hindsight, I really wish that I had used a piece of construction paper to give our snowmen a black hat. Hopefully you’ll remember to make one when your kids are making their own cute snowmen.
