How to Make a Paper Plate Winter Hat Craft
1. Cut the bottom third of your paper plate off.

Draw a line across the bottom third or quarter of your paper plate, then use scissors to cut along the line. You won’t need the smaller piece anymore, so you can recycle it or place it with the rest of your craft supplies for future craft projects.
I kept my line straight, so that it would be simple enough for preschoolers to follow. However, if you’re doing this fun craft with older kids, you can make the bottom section of the hat slightly curved too.
If you like, you can also just draw a hat onto a sheet of construction paper instead of a paper plate.
2. Paint the plate.

Use whatever you like to decorate your paper plate hat. I chose to stick with regular acrylic paint. However you can also use:
- Tissue paper collage, and draw designs using marker pens.
- Watercolor paints with white crayon resist designs.
3. Decorate your hat.

In this step, I used my favorite white paint pen to draw simple designs onto my fun hat craft. I love using acrylic markers for craft projects because they are more sturdy. Whereas using permanent markers on top of paint ruins the markers rather quickly. Thankfully, I haven’t had this same problem with paint pens.
There are so many fun ways to make your own patterns on your hat, such as:
- Using snowflake stickers.
- Glue buttons on top.
- Using stamps .
4. Glue on the cotton wool.

Unroll a ball of cotton wool and glue it across the bottom of your winter hat craft. You don’t have to unroll the cotton ball. Instead you can glue a whole row of them to the bottom of the paper plate. However this method makes me feel wasteful, so I prefer to unroll a single ball instead.
Glue an intact ball of cotton wool to the top of the hat, or use a pom pom in whatever color you want instead.
