How to Make a Paper Plate Snowy Owl Craft

1. Paint the back of the paper plate with light grey paint.

This isn’t an essential step of the craft, since snowy owls are white. However, I liked how the different colors made the owl’s wings stand out once the paper plate owls were completed.

2. Bend a small piece of cardboard into a small arch shape.

This will help you paint the feather pattern required for the wings. You can also use an old toilet roll, or a piece of paper folded several times, to make this arch stamp

3. Dip the cardboard in dark grey paint and use it to make patterns on the paper plate.

Cover the entire paper plate with these arch patterns, you can make the pattern as dense as you like. It all depends on how much fun your kids are having.

4. Wait for the paint to dry.

5. Flip the paper plate over and fold the sides of the plate into the middle of the paper plate and glue them into place.

When folding the sides of the paper plate inwards, try to create a slightly triangular shape. You’ll want the head to be slightly smaller than the bottom.

You can use a glue stick, hot glue or even just sticky tape to glue the wings into place.

6. Fold and glue the top of the plate into the middle of the plate.

This section will be the owl’s head. Which you can make as big as you like. I tried to make my little owls head roughly 1/3 of the entire length of the craft. But if you’re kids don’t get it exactly, don’t worry. It’s all about being creative and having fun.

7. Draw a couple of eyes onto a piece of yellow paper.

There are a couple of different ways to make your owls eyes. The easiest way is to just buy some googly eyes and use those instead of making your own.

Alternatively, if you want yellow eyes, you can do what I did and make your own.

Draw small circles on a sheet of yellow paper. Then color in smaller circles in the middle of the yellow circle with a black marker. Finally, use a pair of scissors to cut them out.

8. Glue the eyes onto the top of the paper plate owl.

9. Draw a beak underneath the eyes.

I used my black paint pen to draw the owl’s beak. I made an irregular diamond shape, starting from just underneath the owl’s eyes and continuing roughly an inch into the owl’s body section.

If you don’t have paint pens, you can also use black construction paper or a regular black marker to complete your paper plate owl craft.

10. Leave it to dry.

Once your adorable owl craft is finished you can always hang it up in your classroom or send it home to your class’ parents.
