Push Pin Color Matching Activity for Kids

Use a few simple supplies to make your own Push Pin Color Matching Activity. This is a fun way to teach toddlers and preschoolers their colors while also encouraging fine motor skills.

Please remember that push pins are small and sharp. Do not leave small children unattended with pushpins.

Adult supervision is required for all activities at all times. Some of the links provided in this blog are affiliate links. I will be paid a commission if you use this link to make a purchase.

  1. Push pins in different colors
  2. A cork board
  3. Sheet of paper
  4. Colored pencils or pens

1. Draw the circles.

Take a regular piece of paper and draw some colored circles on it.

The color of the circles is going to depend on what color push pins you have. If you have pins of a different color to the ones shown here, make sure you match those pins to avoid confusing your kids.

2. Color them in.

Use pencils or crayons to color in the circles. Young children can do this step for you. Not only will they love that they can help you, it’s also a great way for them to practice their pencil grip.

3. Secure the paper to the board.

Place the piece of construction paper on top of your cork board and secure it into place. While I’ve tried a few different ways, I find that placing a push pin in each corner is the most efficient way to keep the paper still.

If you don’t have a corkboard on hand, then you can try this activity with a thick piece of cardboard instead. It’ll still work wonderfully and will be a fun activity for your little ones.

4. Enjoy playing.

Now all you have to do is pick up a push pin, and place it into the circles that has the matching color. If your childs little hands still aren’t strong enough to actually push the pin into the cork, then they can always lay the pin on top of the circle instead.

If you’re doing this activity with older children, who find it too easy. You can always make make it a little harder by grabbing some rubber bands.

Encourage them to stretch and loop the rubber bands around the pins (like a geoboard) and come up with their own designs.

Color Recognition

Shapes and colors, as well as sorting and grouping is an early math skill that kids need to develop before they go to school. If you want to make this fine motor activity even more educational, you can draw different shapes on the page instead of only circles. That way they’re getting both shapes and colors at the same time.

Fine Motor Skills

This is a great activity for kids who need some fine motor practice (the muscles in their hands and fingers). Picking up, manipulating and pushing the pins will require kids to work on their hand-eye coordination, pincer grip and more.

There are so many educational activities that will teach young kids all about their colors. Here are some of my favorite play ideas that will get kids learning their colors in no time.

  1. Paper Plate Color Match Activity
  2. DIY Magnetic Color Sort Puzzle
  3. Color Match and Clip Cards (Free Printable)
  4. Color Posting Activity
  5. Color Walk Scavenger Hunt
