How to make a Toilet Paper Roll Monster Craft

There are different ways for you to make your toilet roll monsters. Which way you choose will depend on the supplies you can and what you think will work best for you.

Idea 1. Cover the roll first

This method will work if you’re going to use paint instead of colored paper to make your monsters.

1. Cover or paint your cardboard tube.

If you are using colored paper, then cut your paper into quarters first. I find that an A4 sheet of paper, cut into quarters is the perfect size for covering toilet rolls.

2. Make some hair.

Here I used a strip of yellow paper, which I cut into strips. However, the cuts don’t go all the way through. Instead I left the last half an inch (1 cm) intact.

Then, I rolled the paper into a tube and attached it to the inside of the top of the toilet roll.

Finally, I spread the paper outwards until I was happy with the angle that the paper sat at.

3. Make the face.

I used a regular sharpie to draw a smiley mouth for my monster. As well as several google eyes to complete the monster’s face.

Idea 2. Make your face first

I prefer to make toilet paper crafts using this method when I’m working with very young kids, like toddlers or preschoolers. It gives them a flat surface to work on which makes the whole process easier and less frustrating for little ones.

1. Draw the face.

With this monster I decided to draw a face using a black marker. You can also use wiggle eyes or white paper circles for the eyes if you prefer.

2. Paint the pattern.

I used blue paint and a finger to make a spotty pattern all over the piece of paper.

3. Make some horns.

Draw and cut out some horns from a different colored piece of paper for the horns. You can also make horns out of pipe cleaners or paper straws instead. Simply use sticky tape or glue to attach them to the top of your monster’s head.

4. Attach them to your paper roll.

Once you have all of your pieces ready, use glue to stick them around the toilet paper roll.

Idea 3. Play around with limbs

1. Pipe cleaner arms.

I used a yellow pipe cleaner to give this toilet roll monster some wriggly arms. However you can play around with a whole lot of things, such as:

  1. Feathers
  2. Paper straws
  3. Pom pom hair or pom pom feet

This is a great way to encourage your kids to use their imagination and come up with their own unique monster ideas.
