How to Make a Heart Scrape Painting

1. Draw a large heart shape onto a piece of paper.

2. Fold small pieces of cardboard in half.

I used cardboard from an old cereal box, because this was the easiest option for me. However, you can also use any flat object you have on hand, like a small ruler or an old credit card.

3. Place dots of paint on the side of the heart shape.

If you are right handed, then place the drops on the left hand side of the heart, and vice versa for left handed people. You can also place drops of paint all over the heart instead, just make sure to only use small drops in the middle of the heart, because a little paint goes a long way in this art project.

4. Use the cardboard to scrape the paint from one side of the heart to the other.

This is the fun part. Use your cardboard or key cards to scrape the paint from one end of the heart to the other. You’ll end up leaving behind a thin layer of paint on your cardstock heart, and the different colors will mix together as you go. Don’t worry about the paint going over the pencil line, because you’re going to cut your heart out in the last step.

You can wipe off any excess paint from your cardboard onto a paper towel. Or you can go back over your heart again with the extra paint. Going over the heart several times will help the colors to mix more and create different shades in the end.

5. Let the picture dry.

I like to do scrape paintings on a cookie sheet. Not only does the cookie sheet help to catch all of the extra paint, but it also makes it easier to move onto a drying rack when the kids are finished painting.

6. Cut out the heart.

Once the paint is completely dry, take a pair of scissors and cut out the heart shape. Now you can use your heart to make your own gift card or just leave it as a Valentine’s day craft as it is. Not only are these hearts so much fun to make, they also look wonderful hanging up on your classroom wall.
