How to Make and Play the Wrap the Present Fine Motor Activity
1. Set up your materials.
For this activity I pre cut several pieces of wrapping paper for my kids. Then all I needed was a collection of small toys, some scissors and sticky tape.
2. Pick a toy.
Place a toy in the middle of your paper, look at how big the paper is compared to the toy. If the paper is too big, move on to step 3. If it’s the right size, move on to step 4.
3. Cut the paper to size.
Since I precut the wrapping paper, it was a lot easier for my kids to practice their scissor skills. I think that asking them to cut the paper straight off the entire roll would have been too much for them.
I also made the pieces rather large, because I wanted my kids to experiment with the different sizes and how having a piece of paper that was too small or too big for the object they chose would affect their wrapping.
4. Wrap the toys
Play around with folding or scrunching the paper around the toys. Your kids will also need to experiment with the amount of force they exert on the wrapping paper. i.e. If they pull the paper too hard, it’s going to rip.
5. Seal it shut
Use sticky tape to attach the pieces of wrapping paper together, concealing the toy inside.
6. Repeat.
Enjoy wrapping as many toys as you like. If your kids love dramatic play, they can also go and place their presents underneath the Christmas tree or pretend to be Santa Claus delivering gifts.
