How to Make a Yarn Christmas Tree Craft

1. Draw a Christmas tree on your cardboard.

You can make your Christmas tree design as simple as you like. Even just a basic triangle would work well for this fun activity.

2. Cut out the tree.

This is a great way for young children to work on their scissor skills. If you are doing this Christmas craft with older children, with more developed fine motor skills, you can try drawing a tree with individual branches for them to practice cutting around.

3. Spread glue over the cardboard tree.

4. Cut your green yarn into small pieces and then place the pieces onto the tree.

You can use as much yarn as you like. If you are doing this activity with younger kids, like toddlers and preschoolers, they may not stay focused long enough to cover the whole tree. In which case, you can always use green cardboard instead of a recycled box to make your Christmas tree template instead.

5. Decorate your tree.

I used small gift bows to decorate my tree. However you can use a whole variety of different things, such as:

  1. Christmas pom poms
  2. Pipe cleaners
  3. Stickers

6. Trim the edges.

Cut off any bits of yarn that are hanging over the edges of your tree. This step is optional, and I only did it to make my tree look more neat.
