How to Make a 3D Paper Christmas Tree Craft

1. Download and print the free printable templates

There are both black and white, and color versions included in the free download. That way, you can choose to decorate your Christmas tree however you like. To get your copy of the free patterns, just head to the bottom of the post and click the large blue button.

For this picture tutorial, I printed off the basic circle version onto a piece of green paper. You’ll only need one sheet of construction paper to make one 3 D paper Christmas tree.

2. Cut out the circles

Use a pair of scissors to cut out each circle.

If you are decorating your own tree on a sheet of white paper, then make sure you paint or color in the circles before you move onto the next steps. It’ll be a lot easier to decorate the circles while they are still flat.

3. Fold the circle in half, repeatedly

You’re going to fold the paper in an accordion pattern. For a circle shape, that means folding it in half, like in the picture below. As you can see, for all of the dotted lines, you’ll fold the paper in an “up” direction, and for all the solid lines you’ll fold the paper in a “down” direction. This will be a total of 8 different folds.

4. Repeat for all of the different sizes

Fold each of the circles in the same pattern as the step above.

5. Cut off the top section of the tree

Use a pair of scissors to cut off the top section of the three larger circles. You want this hole to be very small, only wide enough for the wire of a pipe cleaner to fit through. If you make it too wide, then the tree pieces won’t stand on top of each other and will instead fall down.

Also make sure to leave the smallest section of your paper trees intact.

6. Thread a pipe cleaner through the hole

Insert a pipe cleaner through the center of each of the three bottom sections of the tree. The pipe cleaner is wonderful because the bristles on the pipe cleaner holds the paper in place. So you can make the different sections of your tree as far apart or as close together as you like.

Finally, balance the smallest green tree shape on the top of the tree.
