How to Make Scrape Painted Christmas Tree Cards

Triangle drawn onto white paper.

1. Fold an A4 sheet of white card stock in half, and cut it down the middle.

2. Use a pencil and ruler to draw a tree shape.

You can make this christmas tree whatever shape you like. For young children, it’ll be easier for them to work with a simple cone shape. However older kids will be able to cut out the classic christmas tree shape by themselves. So you can let your kids choose what kind of tree they want to make before they start.

Paper, with dots of green and yellow paint on the left hand side.

3. Place dots of paint along the side of your triangle. (If your child is left handed, then place the dots of paint along the right hand side of the tree.)

I used two different shades of green, and a bit of yellow for my christmas tree art. But of course, you can do whatever you like. Your kids might prefer to use all sorts of different colors and make a rainbow tree instead.

Hand holding a small piece of cardboard.

4. Fold a small piece of cardboard in half, and then use it to scrape the dots of paint across the page.

You can go over the triangle as many times as you like, so don’t worry if you end up with white spots, because these are easy to cover up.

Hand, scraping the green and yellow paint from one side of the page to the other.

5. Let the paint dry.

Blue paper, with a triangle drawn on the front.

6. Take a sheet of light blue paper and fold it in half.

Although I used blue paper, you can pick whatever color you want. Giving your kids the option to choose different colors of paper is a great way for them to be unique and create different designs.

7. Draw a triangle on the front of your Christmas cards.

Place the triangle near the top of the page. You want to ensure that you leave enough space at the bottom of the card to include the tree trunk.

Blue paper, with triangle cut out of the center.

8. Cut out the center triangle.

Older kids will be able to do this step on their own. However toddlers and preschoolers will need an adult to help them.

If you want your toddlers and preschoolers to work on their scissor skills, you can adjust this easy Christmas craft to suit their capabilities. Instead of cutting out the blue front cover of the card, cut out the green triangle on the first stage of the craft. Then simply glue the green triangle onto the cover of your card. This is a much easier way to help strengthen little hands, as it’s a fun way to get them to work on their fine motor skills.

9. Cut out and glue a small piece of cardboard at the bottom of the front cover of your card.

This will be the tree trunk. If you don’t have any spare cardboard, then brown paper, or even brown crayons will work just as well.

Hand spreading glue to the inside cover of the card.

10. Open up your card, and place glue all along the inside of the front cover.

Hand patting down white paper, to blue card cover.

11. Paste the green triangle picture, paint side down, on the inside of the cover.

12. Place a gold or yellow star at the top of the tree.

I used a simple gold sticker for my tree’s star, but you can use whatever you already have on hand.

13. Draw some Christmas lights.

I started by using a black marker to draw swirly lines across the Christmas tree. I then used a variety of different colors to make small dots on either side of the black lines.

If you want some other ideas, you can also try:

  1. covering the tree with white glue and then sprinkle glitter over the top.
  2. Use christmas stickers to decorate the tree
  3. Use Christmas wrapping paper, instead of scrape painting to make the green for your tree.
Open card, with the message "Merry Christmas" written inside.

14. Write your message on the inside of the card.
