How to Make a Washi Tape Christmas Tree Craft

Triangle drawn on sheet of white paper.

1. Draw a large triangle on a sheet of white paper.

You can make the triangle as large or as small as you like, however it should be in the shape of a  Christmas tree.

I also like to make the triangle near the top of the paper, because you can save the section at the bottom of the tree for later. Using it to create a snowy hill for the background of your washi tape Christmas craft.

2. Layer your colorful washi tape in strips, until the entire tree is covered.

Don’t worry about keeping the tape inside the lines, because these will be cut off in the next step to make the tree shape.

Alternate the different patterns of washi tape that you use as you go up the tree. Don’t forget to take this opportunity to talk to your kids about the various lengths of the piece of washi tape that they’re using, and give them a small math lesson at the same time.

Triangle completely covered in green washi tape.

If you are doing this activity with younger children, like toddlers and preschoolers, they may not have the ability or the patience to cover the entire washi tape tree in this way.

Another idea is to make a triangle out of green paper instead, and then let your children decorate it with small pieces of washi tape however they like. That way they don’t need to decorate the entire triangle and it’ll still look like a Christmas tree.

4. Cut out the triangle shape and set it aside for later.

Using scissors is a great way for kids of all ages to develop fine motor skills. Since patterned washi tape is a little translucent, it’ll be easy for them to see and follow the lines of the triangle that you drew in the first step.

Cardboard cut into a 1 by 3 inch rectangle.

5. Cut out a piece of cardboard or brown paper, for the Christmas tree trunk.

I used a piece of cardboard from an old cereal box, since I made my picture to fit on a A4 sheet of paper, the trunk ended up being roughly 1 by 3 inches (2.5 – 7.5 cm).

If you want to use this idea to make washi tape Christmas tree cards instead, you’ll need to make everything smaller so that they can fit on a A5 size of paper instead.

Blue paper, with a white paper strip glued onto the bottom.

6. Cut out and glue a piece of white paper onto a blue A4 sized piece of cardstock.

The white paper is the one that I saved from the bottom of the original page that I drew my triangle on. I just used a pair of scissors to make the top into a curved hill design.

7. Glue the tree trunk into place.

8. Glue the triangle onto the top of the tree trunk.

9. Let it dry.

This idea is also an easy way to make DIY cards for Christmas. All you need to do is scale everything down until they fit on the front of a piece of paper that is folded in half.
