  • Spaghetti
  • 1 Tbsp. Vinegar
  • 10 drops Food Coloring per color
  • Ziplock Bags – 1 per color
  • Water

1. Cook the pasta

Boil a pot of water and cook the spaghetti according to the package directions.

If you don’t like the idea of using food for sensory play, you can always substitute the spaghetti with yarn instead.

Yarn also has the added benefit of being reusable, you can even place it into a laundry bag as wash it if you need to.

2. Drain the pasta and let it cool.

You’ll want to pasta to be cool before you move onto the next step. Placing hot pasta inside a plastic bag affects the integrity of the bag.

3. In a Ziplock bag, place 1 Tbsp. vinegar, 10 drops of food coloring and 1/6 of the cooked spaghetti.

If the spaghetti doesn’t get covered thoroughly or if you want the colors to be brighter, then add in more vinegar and food coloring. It’s easy to adjust the colors as you go until you get what you want.

4. Close the bag and shake it until all of the spaghetti is covered in color.

You can let your baby or toddler help you with this step. They love getting involved in the preparation of the activity as well as playing with it once it’s ready.

5. Let the spaghetti dry on a plate for 5 minutes

This helps the color to set and protect your babies clothes from staining. This will also let the pasta cool down even further if you need it to.

6. Enjoy playing

If you’re trying this activity with toddlers, include some extra tools, such as tongs or scissors.

I gave my toddler some scissors so that he could practice his fine motor skills. He wasn’t too interested in cutting the spaghetti because he was having too much fun eating it. This taught me not to try sensory bins before lunchtime.
