Materials Needed

  • An old box
  • Paper
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Q-tips
  • Paint
  • Sharpies
  • A push pin and/or a small screwdriver

How to Make a DIY Valentines Peg Board

Make your box

Step 1: Cover an old box with white paper, or paint with white paint.

2. Using a pink sharpie or pen, draw a heart on the paper. Then fill in the heart with dots.

I made my dots close together because I gauged how much space I needed to fit the q-tips together. I don’t recommend that you do this, but only because it makes this project longer to make.

If you make fewer dots, with larger spaces in between, then you won’t have to make so many holes and you won’t have to make so many pegs.

3. Make the holes.

I made the initial holes using a push pin. This was very easy to do, however the holes were too small for the q-tips to fit through.

To make the holes larger I then took a small screwdriver and pushed that into the holes as well. This worked perfectly, although it did mean that it took longer because I had to go over each hole twice.

Make the Pegs

Step 3: Dip the cotton wool on each side of each q-tip into some paint.

I used different shades of pink to make my pegs. I found that the paint works better than coloring in the q-tips with a sharpie (which you can do too). The colors come out more vivid and it’s a whole lot easier.

When waiting for the paint to dry, I balanced the q-tips on some toy blocks. This worked fantastically and I didn’t have to worry about paint getting all over the table.

4: When the paint has dried, cut the q-tips in half.

5: Enjoy playing
