How to Make the Pumpkin Count and Clip Cards

1. Download and print the free PDF.

The pumpkin seeds count and clip cards come as a free digital download. To get your copy, just click the blue button at the bottom of the post.

2. Laminate the cards

Use a home laminator to laminate each of the sheets. Although this step is optional I highly recommend that you do it. Laminating the cards makes them more sturdy, so you can easily pack the cards away and use them for next year’s class room.

3. Cut out each of the cards.

Use a pair of scissors to cut the A4 paper into the individual cards.

Although, if you prefer, you can always cut the cards first, then laminate them and then cut them out again. So if you accidentally cut out the cards first, don’t worry, just go through steps 2 and 3 to finish making your count and clip cards.

How to Play

1. Count the pumpkin seeds

Each card has a picture of a pumpkin, with pumpkin seeds in the middle. Count each of these seeds.

Since this fun math activity is for young children, this set of pumpkin cards contains the numbers 1 – 10.

2. Find the corresponding number

Look at the bottom of the task cards. It will contain three different numbers on it. Find the numeral that represents the same number of pumpkin seeds in the pumpkin above.

For example, if you have four pumpkin seeds on your count and clip card, then find the numeral 4 at the bottom.

3. Clip wooden clothespins onto the correct number.

Use a clothes pins to clip over the correct numeral. For example, if you have the card with four pumpkin seeds on it, then you’ll use a clothespin to clip over the numeral 4 at the bottom of the card.

What You’re Learning

Math

There are a number of different math lessons contained in this one great activity. Which is why it’s the perfect addition to any Fall or pumpkin theme math center.

Counting Skills – This is an easy way to help your toddlers and preschoolers learn to count from 1 to 10.

Number Recognition – Learn how numerals 1 – 10 are written.

Number – Numeral Matching – Learn to correctly match the number of seeds to the numeral that represents that number.

One-to-one Correspondence – practice counting each seed only once in this set of clip cards. Some preschool and kindergarten children have a hard time learning this math concept.

If this is something you would like to work on, then try using mini erasers or real pumpkin seeds to match out the number of seeds on the card. For example, if you have a card with four pumpkin seeds on it. Place 4 little pumpkins on top of the card, counting them as you go.

Fine Motor Skills

Fine motor skills refer to the small muscles in the hand and fingers. Developing these skills are important in being able to write when the kids go to school, as well as being able to complete tasks independently. (For example, dressing and feeding themselves).

Picking up the clothespins, and clipping them onto the pumpkin cards are all going to help young kids develop:

  1. Pincer grip
  2. Hand-eye coordination
  3. Dexterity.
  4. Hand strength

Science

While you’re doing this activity, talk to your kids about pumpkin and any fun science facts you may know. You can talk about:

  1. The life cycle of a pumpkin.
  2. How and where do pumpkins grow?
  3. How do pumpkins get from the farm to us?
  4. What do we use pumpkins for?
