I love the idea of using this craft to make a personalized Christmas bunting that shows my kids handprints from every Christmas. Of course it’ll take time to collect all the hand prints from when they’re a baby till they’re grown. But it’s such a wonderful way to make a great keepsake that will always be cherished.

  2. Printer and paper
  3. Paint in various colors
  4. Paintbrushes
  5. Glue
  6. Ribbon or string.

1. Download and print the digital files

Download and print one copy of the craft template for each child onto a piece of paper.

You can find a digital copy of the printable templates below, just head to the bottom of the post and click the large blue button to get your copy.

2. Cover your child’s hand in paint.

Use a paintbrush to cover your child’s hand in acrylic paint.

I let my kids choose which color they wanted for their Christmas lights. It’s a great way to let them add another personal touch to this group project.

3. Press their hand to the template

For the best results, encourage your kids to keep their fingers together when making the child’s handprints. This is so that they don’t go out of the lines, which will make step 6 much easier.

4. Let the paint dry

Carefully lift up the hands, trying not to smudge the handprint and let the paint dry. When the paint is dry you can move onto the next step.

5. Write the Christmas Wish

On each template there is a Christmas light that has the words “My Christmas wish is.”

This is the back of the Handprint Christmas light craft. You don’t have to fill it in if you don’t want to. But it’s a fun way for your young kids to share what they would like to happen or get this holiday season.

6. Cut it out

Use a pair of scissors to cut out each of the Christmas light templates. If you are doing this craft with older children, they can do this step by themselves.

However babies and toddlers will need an adult to do this step for them.

7. Glue them together

Glue, staple or use sticky tape to attach the back of the Christmas lights to the front. If you are using this easy Christmas craft as part of a bunting, then staple the ribbon or string to the top of each light.

If you are doing this handprint Christmas craft with your children, and want to save them for years to come, then I recommend laminating each of the Christmas lights when you have finished making them. As well as writing the year they were made on the side. That way, when you look back you can see how old they were when they made that particular Christmas light.
