  1. Yarn in different colors
  2. Embroidery Hoop
  3. Mesh Fabric
  4. Kids Sewing Needles
  5. Scissors
  6. Marker

1. Cut out a piece of mesh fabric

I specifically chose a mesh fabric because the gaps in between the threads are large enough for a kids sewing needle to go through.

If you are doing this project with older kids, who can use a regular sewing needle, then you can choose whichever fabric you like.

2. Place the fabric in the embroidery hoop

Open up the embroidery hoop and place the mesh fabric over the smaller hoop. Then place the larger hoop on top of the fabric, turning the dial to close the larger hoop until it is tight.

I did this project with a large hoop because I thought it would be easier for the kids to handle something bigger. I was wrong. I recommend going for smaller hoops, especially if this is your first sewing project.

3. Draw your heart

Use a marker to draw the heart shape onto your mesh fabric.

I chose to do one large heart, but I think lots of smaller ones would look lovely too.

4. Get the needle ready.

Thread a piece of yarn through the end of your needle and tie it in place. Next, thread the yarn through one section of the heart and tie it in place.

You don’t have to tie the yarn in place. I just did this because I have young kids and it was easier for them when they didn’t have to worry about rethreading the needle every time they pulled too hard.

5. Sew the outline

Weave the yarn through the fabric, following the outline you created in step 3.

Trim the end of your yarn with a pair of scissors when you’ve finished your design.

6. Draw your inside design

Now you can have fun designing the inside part of your heart. I wanted to try some squiggle sections, but you can also try stripes, smaller hearts nesting inside one another or just stick to one plain color.

7. Trace the lines

Once again, I traced the lines of my design with red yarn. You may need to miss this step, depending on what kind of design you’re going to try.

8. Fill in the gaps

Pick a different color yarn and fill in your design.

This can take a while. Which is another reason why I recommend using smaller embroidery hoops with younger kids. Because they’ll lose interest more quickly if they feel like they’re not making any progress.
