Materials Needed
- Wooden clothespins
- Craft feathers
- Wooden craft stick
- Old tissue box (optional)
- Paint
- Glue
- Printer and paper (Optional)
- Colored pencils (Optional)
How to Make a Clothespeg Bird Craft
1. Paint the clothespeg – The easiest way to do this, is to place the clothespin onto the end of a wooden craft stick. That way you can hold the end of the stick without getting paint all over your fingertips.

2. Let the paint dry – I like to use an old tissue box to prop up the craft stick. That way the clothespin can dry without the paint sticking to whatever surface you lay it on to dry.

3. Glue the feathers into place – Place a feather on either side of the clothespeg. One for each wing. You can also glue an additional feather on the back of the clothespeg to act as a tail.

4. Paint the face – use some paint pens to draw a beak and eyes onto the front of the clothespeg. Then let it dry.

Make your Bird Spotting Book
This part of the craft is optional. A fun way to turn your craft into a bird spotting activity
1. Download and print the free printable template – you can download the free pdf by clicking the large blue button below.

2. Use colored pencils to fill in each bird picture – use the same colors you used to create your birds when filling in your bird book.
For example, if your bird has a blue body and red wings, color in the bird picture with a blue body and red wings (this will be important later).

3. Cut out and assemble the pages – use a pair of scissors to cut out the pages you’re going to use and staple them together to form your bird book.
Laminating the pages is optional. I knew this was an activity I was going to do multiple times with my kids, so I laminated the book so we could tick the ‘found’ box again and again.

How to Play
1. Hide your clothepeg birds – head out into the garden and clip your clothespeg birds onto various branches.
After doing this activity I realised that dark and green colored birds were harder to find. If you’re doing this activity with toddlers, who find it harder to spot the darker colors, then I recommend sticking to brighter paint colors, such as light blue, pink or white.

2. Start searching – grab your bird spotting book and a pencil, then head out to the garden to find each bird.
Once you’ve found a bird, find the page that has the corresponding picture and tick it off.

3. Continue searching until all the birds are found – my kids loved this activity when they were younger, not only because they got to be involved with every aspect of creating it, but because they liked wandering around the garden with a pair of binoculars.
