Clothespeg Bird Craft for Kids

My son has the funniest bird walk. I don’t mean that he walks like a bird. I mean that when he is trying to sneak up on a bird so that he doesn’t scare them, the walk he uses is priceless. He puts his hands on his knees, crouches low to the ground, and does a kind of waddle. Unfortunately, it never works. The birds always fly away. (They don’t appreciate his funny walk the way his mother does).

Just because the real birds won’t cooperate doesn’t mean that should spoil his bird-watching fun. Instead, we made this Clothespeg Bird Craft that can clip onto the tree branches. These colorful birds won’t fly away, and armed with this free printable bird spotting book, we’ve just made our very own garden scavenger hunt.

Make entertaining the kids easy with the Spring Activity Pack.

Materials needed for this Clothespeg Bird Craft

  1. Wooden clothespegs
  2. Wooden craft sticks (optional)
  3. Paint
  4. Craft feathers
  5. Paper
  6. Printer
  7. Laminating sheet and laminator (optional)
  8. Crayons or pencils

How to make your Clothespeg Bird Craft

Step 1: Put your clothespegs onto the craft sticks. This is optional, but it does make painting and drying the clothespegs so much easier.

2. Paint your clothespegs and let them dry. We used an old tissue box with slits cut in the top to dry our clothespegs. It worked perfectly.

3. Cut your feathers to size (and shape) that you want for the wings and tail. We made birds both with and without tails, so you can decide which one you prefer.

4. Glue your feathers onto your clothespeg.

5. When the paint on your clothespeg is dried, paint a beak and eyes. Or draw some on with a permanent marker.

Now you’re all done. You can make as many birds as you like in whichever combination of colors you like. I would recommend using a unique color combination for each bird because it’ll make the bird spotting part of this activity more straightforward.

How to make your bird spotting book

Step 1: First, you’re going to need to download and print your free copy of my bird spotting book template below.

2. Next, you’ll need to color in each picture to match the colors you used to make the birds.

3. I laminated my birds once they were colored in. Although this is optional, I did it to make the book more sturdy (I want to be able to do this activity repeatedly). It also has the benefit of making the ‘found’ box, erasable. So your kids can tick the box over and over again using a whiteboard marker.

4. Glue (or sticky tape) all the pages together and you’re ready to go.

How to play with your Clothespeg Bird Craft

Now that you have all of your materials, you’ll need to hide the birds throughout the garden. Or even inside the house if it’s a rainy day. The clothespegs clip onto smaller twigs and branches so easily. Then armed with the bird spotting book, your child can go and find all of the birds, making sure to match them all with the right picture so they can tick the seen birds off of their list.

If you want to add to the fun, make a pair of these Rainbow Toilet Paper Roll Binoculars from Crafty Morning. It’s a wonderful craft that will make the bird spotting even more exciting.

Or you can buy a set of these Scotamalone Kid Binoculars for less than $10. What I really love about these binoculars is that they are shockproof. When my son gets excited he has a nasty habit of dropping or throwing things as he’s running off to investigate whatever it is he’s seen. I don’t know about you, but I need toys with a bit more stability to them.
