Materials Needed

  1. Wooden clothespin
  2. White paint
  3. Paint brush
  4. Black marker
  5. Small orange pom pom
  6. Small piece of yarn (rough 2 inches long)

How to Make a Clothespin Snowman Craft

1. Clip your wooden clothespin onto a craft stick.

This first step is optional. However, I find that attaching the clothespin to a craft stick makes it ten time easier to paint. It’s a great way to make sure the entire clothespin is covered in paint, without getting it all over your fingers.

Remember this trick whenever you’re making a clothespin craft idea. You’ll love how much easier the whole project goes.

2. Paint the clothespin white.

I used white acrylic paint for my snowman, but feel free to use whatever kind of paint you have on hand.

You may also want to let your kids choose what color they want to paint their snowman body (instead of just white). This is a wonderful way to let kids use their imaginations, they may decide to make a rainbow snowman instead.

3. Let it dry.

This is yet another reason why I love using craft sticks to hold my clothespins. I’ve poked a few holes into an old egg carton lid, which I now use as a drying rack. Together, the craft stick and egg carton hold the clothespins upright, making sure that the wet paint doesn’t come off on anything.

4. Glue on orange mini pom poms.

I used an orange pom pom for my snowman’s nose. If you don’t have any pom poms handy, don’t worry, you can also draw a carrot nose onto your clothespins using orange permanent markers or paint pen.

5. Draw a face.

I used a regular black marker to draw two black eyes and a spotty smile for my snowman’s face. However, you can also use black paint and a small paintbrush to create the black dots required for these little fellows.

You could also glue small googly eyes to your snowman face if you prefer.

6. Tie the yarn around the snowman neck.

The yarn will be the snowmans scarf. While older kids can tie a knot by themselves, younger children like toddlers and preschoolers will need a little help with this step.

If you don’t have any yarn in your craft supplies, you can use pipe cleaners instead. Pipe cleaners are still soft and colorful, and will also be easier for little kids to do by themselves.

7. Draw on the buttons.

Once again, use your black marker to draw small circle shapes in the middle of the clothespin snowmen, just below the yarn scarf.

An extra step that I wish I had done, was to make a snowman’s hat. It would have been simple enough to cut a hat shape out of black construction paper and use a bit of glue to attach it to the top of the snowmans head.

You can also turn this fun snowman craft into DIY ornaments for your Christmas tree. All you need to do is glue a loop of string or ribbon to the back of the snowmans head and it’ll be a great addition to your Christmas decorations.
